Waypoint Brass Workshop 2026

Join our talented faculty from acclaimed universities for a week of musical instruction! We offer an array of musical opportunities, including large ensemble, chamber groups, and instrument-specific group lessons. Masterclasses will also be presented by professionals from the music community.

All brass instruments are welcome from grades 7-12, including graduating seniors.

Classes

Waypoint offers a variety of classes to help students navigate the musical world!

Large Ensembles

Each day, students will participate in a large brass ensemble. During this time, the students will sit beside their instructors while exploring a variety of arrangements and original works for brass instruments.

Chamber Music

Students will participate in small chamber ensembles. During this time, the students will rehearse in a brass trio, quartet, or quintet to develop their communication and interpretation skills. This is also a chance for students to explore repertoire composed for their instruments, while being coached by a staff member.

Group Lessons

Each day of camp, there is designated time for instrument-focused group lessons. During this time, the students will work with an instructor to learn and practice the fundamentals of their instrument. Students will also have time to ask questions and work on personal goals.

Crash Courses

Throughout the week students will have the chance to participate in crash courses. These classes will help establish a base of knowledge on various topics such as instrument maintenance, arranging, music history and more!!

Masterclasses

During a week of camp, Waypoint has three special guests share their expertise with our students. While the format often changes from guest to guest, these professionals often perform and work with students Infront of their peers.

Concert

At the end of the week, students will share what they have learned with a concert. All of the the chamber groups and the large ensemble participate. Family and friends are invited to attend and support their musicians.

Meet the personnel involved in our brass camps:

Director

Michael Witt

Michael Witt is an active conductor, teacher, and tubist originally from Plainfield, Illinois. He is a current Graduate Wind Conducting student at Northwestern University, and previously studied Tuba Performance and Arts Leadership at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York. While in Rochester, Michael led the Eastman Tuba Mirum, and was a guest conductor for groups like the Rochester Music Educators Ensemble. Additionally, he is one of the founding members of the Cerberus Tuba Trio—a group finalist in the 2020 Northeast Regional Tuba Euphonium Conference (NERTEC) Chamber Music Competition.

Trombone Instructor

Wayne Kreml

Wayne Kreml is a trombone and euphonium player from Columbus, Ohio. His experience includes multiple solo recitals, varying orchestral and wind-band ensembles, opera and musical pit orchestras, and chamber ensembles with multiple years each. He also has experience in varying styles of music-oriented mindfulness. Wayne is the instructor of trombone and euphonium at Waypoint Music Camps, having taught privately and built his own lesson studio for multiple years in the Columbus, Ohio area.

Horn Instructor

Jasmin Bolaños-Merlos

Jasmin Bolaños-Merlos (she/her) is a horn player located in the Chicago area. Jasmin is currently a graduate student at the DePaul School of Music studying with Neil Kimel, second horn of the Lyric Opera of Chicago. She currently performs in various ensembles and is in a horn quartet. Jasmin graduated from the University of Wisconsin–Madison with a B.M. in horn performance and a minor in Chicano/Latino studies. She enjoys synthesizing both of her interests and is passionate in elevating diversity in classical music at the youth level. Jasmin enjoys both the teaching and performing sides of music and she’s excited to be a part of Waypoint Brass Camps.

Tuba Instructor

Sam Russ

Sam Russ is a Chicago based tuba player. He is pursuing his Master's Degree at the Northwestern University Bienen School of Music, studying with Gene Pokorny and Matthew Gaunt. Prior to this, Russ earned his Bachelor's Degree in Tuba Performance at Oberlin Conservatory, studying with Dennis Nulty and David Saltzman. He also holds a degree in Classics from Oberlin. In 2022, Russ was a member of the inaugural National Brass Ensemble Academy where he studied with Jeff Anderson and Yasuhito Sugiyama. In addition to his orchestral experience, Russ played sousaphone in the New Orleans style brass band Smokin' Brass.

Trumpet Instructor

Maryna Pohlman

Maryna Pohlman is a freelance trumpet player currently based out of Bloomington, IN. Her recent notable accomplishments include touring for three months as Principal Trumpet with the Netflix and BBC Original series “Our Planet” Live in Concert USA Tour, as well as recording on the Funk Recording Studio soundtrack for the SGame video game, Honor of Kings. Maryna has also toured as a founding member of the trumpet ensemble, Bel Tono, on their month-long international tour at the 27 Festival de Música: BAC Credomatic in Costa Rica. She is also a founding member of the new all-female trumpet ensemble The Calla Project, which will be making their debut at the 2024 Utah Trumpet Guild Conference, in Salt Lake City, UT.
